The runaways - Karkulaiset

The other day these two runaway horses stood by the fence of the Finca Los Majuelos. As you can see in the picture, one of them still had a long metal chain dragging along from his halter, whereas the other one has only a short stub left. They had broken free...

In Andalusia, horse owners still often use the old practice of tying a horse out for grazing (also known as tethering), most often unsupervised, to take advantage of the grass that grows on waste land. For many conscious horse owners this is like asking for trouble - an injured leg or even worse if the horse become entangled with the chain. Luckily, in this case, the runaways didn't seem to have had injured themselves... Towards the mid-day, the owner of the horses came by to pick them up. He just walked them back down to the river-side by the old mill where he had tethered four of his horses the day before for grazing. Let's see if we'll be seeing these guys more often around here...

Koska täkäläisillä hevosenomistajilla ei läheskään aina ole tallia tai laidunta, on täällä yleinen tapa laiduntaa hevosia (sekä muuleja ja aaseja) sellaisissa paikoissa, joissa kasvaa heinää mm. tienvarsilla, rakennustyömailla ja hylätyillä tiloilla. Finca los Majuelosin lähellä on tällainen tila, hoitamaton ja heinittynyt, ainoa rakennus on vanha mylly (molino de harina) Viar-joen rannassa.

Muutama päivä sitten sinne tuotiin neljä hevosta ja jokainen niistä sidottiin kiinni kettingillä. Espanjalaiseen tyyliin..Ei mennyt kuin yksi yö, ja kaksi hevosista onnistui pääsemään irti. Toisella näistä kaveruksista oli perässään koko pitkä kettinki ja toisella vain pieni pätkä. Siinä ne aamulla seisoskelivat kaikessa rauhassa meidän aidan takana, naapurin tontilla.

Vihdoin puolenpäivän aikaan saapui hevosten omistaja paikalle ja talutti ne takaisin alas joenrantaan. Nähtäväksi jää, laittoiko hän ne tällä kertaa paremmin kiinni vai ovatko hepat taas jonain aamuna aidalla odottamassa.
